During an Avengers meeting, Iron Man consults unsuccessfully via projector with the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and the X-Men over the Hulk’s location. Later, in New Mexico, Rick Jones discovers the Hulk and takes him to Bruce Banner’s lab, where they can change the Hulk into Banner. The change doesn’t last, though, and the Hulk smashes out of the cave. Rick reaches Iron Man, who contacts the other Avengers. They battle the Hulk in the desert, but the Hulk escapes by disappearing into a train tunnel. The Hulk makes his way across the country, and ends up in the Atlantic Ocean, where a passing freighter picks him up, but not before the Sub-Mariner locates him. When the Hulk jumps ship, Namor intercepts him, and they agree to join forces to defeat the Avengers. They challenge the Avengers to meet them at Gibraltar. The Avengers respond, and battle the Hulk and Namor. In the heat of battle, the Hulk reverts back to Bruce Banner, and abandons his partner. Namor, unable to battle all the Avengers alone and on land, breaks free and escapes, swearing to continue the fight against the Avengers and all mankind.
