With Captain America gone, the remaining Avengers battle the remnants of the Masters of Evil, using Thor’s hammer to transport them to another dimension where the Masters are easily defeated due to the extradimensional physics. In South America, Cap and Rick Jones have buried the now-deceased Baron Zemo. After freeing the natives, Cap and Rick briefly fight Zemo’s remaining soldiers before the soldiers flee into the jungles. Soon afterwards Thor departs unexpectedly for Asgard. Back at Avengers Mansion, the Avengers are stunned when the criminal archer Hawkeye breaks in and announces his desire to join the Avengers. The team allows him to join as a probationer, then contact Namor, who respectfully declines Avengers membership. Learning of Hawkeye’s joining and that the Avengers are considering other recruits, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch request membership as well. Shortly after Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch arrive in New York to be met by Tony Stark, Cap and Rick make it back from South America to find a crowd gathered outside Avengers Mansion. Avoiding the crowd, Cap enters the Mansion to find that the founding Avengers are taking a leave of absence, leaving Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as their replacements. Despite his apprehension, Cap agrees to lead the new team. As the new Avengers line-up goes outside to meet the press, the founders slip away to return to their private lives.
