As Kang and several Avengers impatiently await the Game of the Galaxies’ outcome, Grandmaster prepares his pawns for the contest. Kang has two of his soldiers try to shoot down Grandmaster from above, but Grandmaster detects them and blasts them. Resigning themselves to Grandmaster’s apparent invulnerability, Kang and the Avengers watch as Kang’s pawns—Captain America, Goliath and Thor— are joined by a fourth Avenger, Iron Man, newly recovered from his recent health crisis and brought forward through time by Kang for the game. The game begins in four different locations on present-day Earth, and the four Avengers split up. Captain America prevents Nighthawk from stealing or destroying the Statue of Liberty, Iron Man defeats Dr. Spectrum at the Taj Mahal using ultraviolet light (the power prism’s main weakness), Thor shrinks Hyperion and traps him in a makeshift glass bubble at the Sphinx, and Goliath battles Whizzer at London’s Big Ben; however, local hero Black Knight interferes in this last battle despite Goliath’s warnings, striking down Whizzer. Saying the Knight’s interference has prevented a clear-cut victory and possibly doomed the Earth, the Grandmaster spirits away all the players, sweeping the Knight’s blade along with them. The Knight vows to find them and put things right.
Grandmaster goes back in time, empowering and recruiting the Squadron Sinister for his game with Kang.
Hyperion’s origin flashback, showing him surviving his subatomic world’s destruction to be rescued by Grandmaster, is later revealed to be a false memory implanted in Hyperion’s mind by Grandmaster in SqS #8, ’86.
