  • In Garrett Castle, Black Knight lights the Brazier of Truth to commune with his ancestor Sir Percy, who shows a vision of Kang anguishing over the comatose Ravonna. Kang then sends Black Panther, Vision and Yellowjacket to Paris, France in February, 1942, where they battle Nazis until Captain America, Human Torch and Sub-Mariner arrive; mistaking the Avengers for Nazi agents, the wartime heroes attack. Meanwhile, Black Knight uses his bond with his Ebony Blade to bring himself to the 41st Century, where he battles Kang’s men and finds the Wasp. In 1942 the battle rages until Vision phases through the WWII heroes, stunning them and winning the fight in Kang’s favor. Grandmaster, however, insists that Kang has only won power over life or death, not both, since the first half of the game ended in stalemate. Kang is about to choose life as he recalls the Avengers to the future, but then the other Avengers, freed by the Black Knight, burst in. Unable to resist a chance to destroy all the Avengers, Kang chooses the power of death instead of life, but since he requested this power over the Avengers, their ally Black Knight is immune and defeats Kang, saving the Avengers. Kang loses his chance to save Ravonna, and the Grandmaster returns the heroes to their own time, where Black Knight is awarded Avengers membership.

Grandmaster and Kang agree to play the Game of the Galaxies (Av #69, ’69 fb). The Avengers battle the Squadron Sinister and Grandmaster admonishes Black Knight for interfering (Av #70, ’69).

This issue reveals that Cap, Human Torch & Sub-Mariner worked together during WWII, but their team isn’t named until GSInv #1, ’75. Inv Ann #1, ’77 retells this story from the Invaders’ perspective, revealing why Cap’s using his original steel shield & why Sub-Mariner is wearing his old trunks. Black Knight joins the Avengers as an inactive member here.
