  • Following Man-Ape’s abduction of Black Panther, the Avengers call in Iron Man and Thor to help plan strategy. Vision departs to inform Andrew Jackson High School that “Luke Charles” (the Panther’s schoolteacher alter ego) will be absent today, using this errand to test his new human-looking disguise, but the school’s secretary is unnerved by Vision’s eerie looks and voice despite his disguise. Meanwhile, the Lethal Legion prepares ambushes for the Avengers and secretly allow their captives, the Black Panther and Monica Lynne, to escape their bonds just long enough to send a message informing the Avengers of the Legion’s whereabouts. Once the message is sent, the Grim Reaper subdues the Panther and Lynne. The villains soon capture Goliath, Scarlet Witch, Captain America and Quicksilver, but the “Prometheus Priority” code phrase in Panther’s message had warned the Avengers of a possible trap, so they are already preparing their escape when Vision arrives disguised as Power Man, tossing the real Power Man (disguised as Vision) into a giant hourglass deathtrap with the captive Avengers. The fake Power Man also shows off “stolen” Avengers files detailing how Vision’s artificial mind was replicated from the mind of the Grim Reaper’s late brother Wonder Man. Horrified at the prospect of possibly killing his own reborn brother, Reaper frees the Avengers, who capture all the villains. The heroes praise Vision, but he abruptly quits the team, saying an android has no place among flesh and blood people.

    Man-Ape captures Black Panther (Av #78, ’70).
