  • Spider-Man breaks up a gang of robbers but then hears that Aunt May has fallen ill. At ESU Professor Warren tells Peter that his grades are slipping. After seeing another televised Jameson anti-Spider-Man speech, Peter rejects the pressures of his double life and throws his costume into a back alley trashcan. A boy finds it and brings it to Jameson, who is overjoyed that Spider-Man may have quit. Hearing the news, the Kingpin decides to consolidate his control over the criminal underworld. Patch hears about the Kingpin and Foswell wonders if he could assume control of the mob instead. Peter doesn’t get involved until he comes across the Kingpin’s men assaulting a night watchman. Without his costume, Peter rescues the man, defeating the criminals. The night watchman resembles Uncle Ben, reminding Peter that great power means great responsibility. Elsewhere, Foswell visits the Kingpin and, as the former Big Man tries to dethrone him, Kingpin disarms him with his disintegrator cane and takes him prisoner. Peter breaks into Jameson’s office and steals back his Spider-Man costume. An arriving Jameson is anguished to see that Spider-Man has returned.

The Kingpin’s real name revealed in DD #170, ’81.
