Through the power of the Evil Eye, the Dark Dimension starts merging with earth’s dimension and ordinary people are turned into monsters. The Avengers and Defenders hold the monsters at bay until Nick Fury and SHIELD arrive, allowing the heroes to go the Dark Dimension to face Dormammu. Meanwhile, learning of Loki’s treachery, Dormammu imprisons him. The Watcher appears before Dormammu to observe the inter-dimensional merger. The Avengers and Defenders fight off a horde of Mindless Ones before reaching Dormammu, who blasts the Defenders and traps most of the Avengers in quicksand. Dormammu strips Iron Man of his armor and reverts Thor to Don Blake, leaving only Scarlet Witch. Loki frees himself and attacks Dormammu. Scarlet Witch creates a hex sphere that causes the Evil Eye to siphon Dormammu’s energy and blast it into Loki’s face, returning his sight and driving him mad. Earth’s dimension returns to normal and the heroes return to Earth with the Evil Eye and Loki in custody.
Chapter 11 (unnumbered) of the Avengers/Defenders War, continuing from Def #10, ’73. The Vision’s panic at being stuck in quicksand is another clue that the android’s body is that of the original Human Torch, a fact that isn’t revealed until Av #135, ’75. Iron Man and Thor’s secret identities are revealed to their teammates, but Dr. Stange mystically erases this knowledge (although he may retain it himself). A monster’s hand in this issue belongs to a transformed Swamp Man and other Swamp Men are behind the scenes. Letters page includes a LoC from future Marvel editor and writer Ralph Macchio.
