As the Avengers and the Fantastic Four arrive at Avengers Mansion after Quicksilver and Crystal’s wedding, the heroes and their guests are menaced by a freak lightning storm until FF governess Agatha Harkness mystically dispels it. She explains the storm was a magical attack on her, and she was expecting it. The FF volunteer to protect her but Agatha declines, saying the FF’s young associate Franklin Richards no longer needs a governess, and volunteering to serve as witchcraft tutor to the Scarlet Witch. Already interested in learning sorcery, Wanda accepts Agatha’s offer and Harkness moves into Avengers Mansion with her cat Ebony. Vision seeks to convince Wanda of his love for her, but Wanda turns him away to begin her studies with Harkness, who seals herself, Wanda and Ebony within a room where they are soon attacked by Necrodamus, the source of the lightning storm, who intends to steal Agatha’s soul. When Necrodamus seemingly defeats Ebony and Harkness in the ensuing battle, Scarlet Witch pushes her hex power beyond its usual limits with a mystical boost from Ebony and destroys Necrodamus’ soul-catching box, unleashing a host of trapped souls that sweep Necrodamus away. When Harkness and Ebony recover immediately, Wanda realizes they could have beaten Necrodamus without her, and that the battle was a test. Elsewhere in the mansion, Mantis callously declares she no longer loves the Swordsman, who flies into a fit of anguished rage until Iron Man and Thor restrain him. Mantis then privately approaches the Vision, first asking his advice about her apparently altered memories of her past, then romantically propositioning him. Vision tells Mantis he values her as a friend but nothing more, since he is in love with Wanda. Their discussion is interrupted when a star appears out of nowhere above Avengers Mansion, flooding the area with blazing light. As the Avengers, Harkness and Ebony rush outside to investigate, their old foe Kang the Conqueror appears, claiming the star portends his conquest of their world.
