The Avengers and Squadron reappear on the Squadron’s world. Their fight is broken up by the arrival of the army and President Rockefeller, who wears the Serpent Crown. Turning so insubstantial that he is virtually invisible, Vision snatches the crown from Rockefeller’s head and hands it to Scarlet Witch, who uses a threat to destroy it as leverage to allow the Avengers to escape. Through his connection to the Crown Rockefeller telepathically contacts fellow Serpent Crown slave Hugh Jones on the Avenger’s Earth. Elsewhere, Thor, Moondragon and Hawkeye return from the past with Two-Gun Kid; Hawkeye confirms to Thor that he still intends to leave the Avengers, and the archer departs with Two-Gun. Back on Other-Earth Scarlet Witch tries to glean information from the crown but falls prey to its control, unnoticed by all her teammates bar the Vision. Fleeing her android spouse, she runs into the Squadron, but the Vision comes to her rescue. Her love for him allows her to fight off the crown’s control and assist him in defeating the Squadron.
The Serpent Squad uses the crown to brainwash Hugh Jones, but are stopped by Nomad (Cap #181, ’75).
Lonni’s last name revealed in Thor #280, ’79. The letters page includes a LoC from future writer/artist Fred Hembeck. The Serpent Crown (and its various extradimensional counterparts) was created by the Elder god Set to spread his influence; he can be considered bts in a low-key way in all its appearances, but is not listed amongst a given issue’s characters unless his presence is more overtly felt.
