Count Nefaria offers Erik Josten a chance to reclaim his Power Man identity and instructs him to break Living Laser and Whirlwind out of prison. As the Lethal Legion, the trio robs a bank to get money to finance Nefaria’s latest scheme, which they believe is to boost their powers. The Avengers fail to stop the villains from fleeing the crime scene. Nefaria’s scientists amplify the powers of the Lethal Legion, who then launches an assault on Avengers Mansion. In the midst of battle, the villains’ powers unexpectedly disappear and the Avengers defeat the trio. Suddenly, the heroes are felled by a giant shockwave and face a transformed Nefaria, who confidently announces that he will slay them all.

Wasp’s and Yellowjacket’s powers are increased, as first shown in MTU #59-60, ’77. Wasp wears the red and yellow costume she readopted in MTU #59, ’77 intermittently through Av #180, ’79. Wonder Man is revealed to be a living energy being. Count Nefaria adopts a new costume that is revealed to be a power conductor next issue. Prof. Sturdy is revealed to have helped Heinrich Zemo design the machine that created Wonder Man in Av #9, ’64.
