Departing, the Avengers near the USSR’s border where their Quinjet draws attention from Soviet MIGs. As the Avengers’ request permission to enter Soviet airspace, a MIG explodes and the others race back to base. Following, the Avengers land at a nuclear power plant surrounded by Soviet troops. With permission from the senior Russian officer present, the Avengers enter the plant to encounter several humanoid chemical embodiments, the Elements of Doom, but are are driven back by Chlorine’s gas. Realizing Wasp has been left behind, Falcon goes back for her and is captured. Regrouping outside, the Avengers find Soviet technicians examining the Quinjet; after the Scarlet Witch drives them back, the Wasp arrives to inform the team of the Falcon’s capture. Re-entering the facility, the Avengers rescue him, then use a tank’s laser cannon to breach the reactor, burying the Elements under a tide of nuclear plasma. Fleeing the facility, the Avengers quickly depart in their Quinjet as the Soviet troops fire upon them.

A shrunken Wasp wakes after being knocked out and watches unnoticed as the Elements of Doom transform a captured Soviet technician into a new Element, Cobalt (d).

Tb #7, ’97 reveals Khandruvitch originally created the Elements of Doom. The group appears next in AvCol #1, ’93, renamed the Masters of Alchemy.
