Flying back to Avengers Mansion, Falcon spots the similarly airborne Thor departing. Brooding about his duties keeping him away from the Avengers, Thor hurtles past so swiftly that he never notices Falcon, who is nearly blown out of the sky by Thor’s downdraft. As Falcon arrives at the mansion, Thor’s fellow reservists Hawkeye, Wonder Man and Yellowjacket are also departing after a recent mission. Still uneasy about being recruited into the group to comply with federal affirmative action laws, Falcon tries to make peace with Hawkeye, who bitterly resents the government forcing him off the active roster. Declaring he is more of an asset to the Avengers than Falcon will ever be, Hawkeye exits. Later, Captain America informs Gyrich of the reservists’ departure. Just as Gyrich is congratulating Cap on the team running smoothly, Scarlet Witch asks to extend her leave of absence for personal reasons. Seeing this as more defiance of his management, Gyrich angrily warns he will resolve this in person. Meanwhile, Hawkeye is living in a cheap apartment and seeking work when he sees high-tech firm Cross Technological Enterprises (CTE) advertising for a security chief. After proving his skills by breaking into CTE, Hawkeye gets the job, soon earning his generous salary by capturing flying alien criminal Deathbird when she stages her latest in a series of robberies of CTE equipment. Back at Avengers Mansion, the team is arguing that Scarlet Witch can’t be made to stay against her will, but Gyrich warns that their refusal to cooperate will mean the end of the Avengers.
Gyrich appears to be using the office of “C.J. Ca..., Dept. of Agriculture.” Deathbird swears on “Shigon’s bones” -- presumably a Shi’ar deity or historical figure.
