  • A meteor crashing to Earth alters course in the last seconds to strike near Brooklyn’s coast, releasing a stone creature that lumbers towards Manhattan. A few hours later the Avengers attend a special Senate hearing called by Gyrich to discuss the team’s future. One of the Avengers’ lawyers, Emerson Bale, recounts examples of the Avengers’ heroics, but Gyrich counters with his own witnesses and testimony of Avengers Mansion security failures. However, when reports of the stone creature’s progress reach them, the hearing is put on hold so the Avengers can respond; Matt Murdock, another lawyer for the Avengers, slips away to change into Daredevil and joins the Avengers in battling the creature. After a hard fight, they smash it to rubble, but as Iron Man investigates it, Daredevil’s enhanced senses alert him to a heartbeat under the rocks. Too late, he tries to warn the armored Avenger, both men are turned to stone as the Grey Gargoyle rises from the debris, promising to kill them all.

When Egghead’s orbiting death-ray threatens the world, the Avengers stop him (Av #64, ’69). They also stop Ultron when he storms the UN (Av #68, ’69), and prevent Graviton from dropping his flying island on New York (Av #159, ’77).
