  • Making short work of the Avengers, the Grey Gargoyle departs, saying he has other things to attend to. Recovering, the team realizes that the Falcon is missing; meanwhile their teammate, having recovered first, is tracking the Gargoyle from high in the air. Reaching his old apartment, the felon is angered to discover a new tenant in situ; confronting her, the Gargoyle explains his origins and tells her he has come to collect his hidden chemical stash, with which he can increase his powers, only to find she has thrown it out. Before he can take out his rage on the helpless woman, Falcon intervenes, and despite being grossly outmatched, keeps the fight going long enough for the other Avengers to be alerted and get there. Using her hex power Scarlet Witch reverts the Gargoyle to his human form, and Beast knocks him out. Later, when the Senate hearing is reconvened, the Avengers’ actions against the Gargoyle convince the senators to rule against Gyrich and in the Avengers’ favor, letting them retain their priority privileges, and instructing Gyrich that they should suffer less government interference.

A lab accident gives Pierre Duval the power to turn things to stone. As the Grey Gargoyle, he tries to steal Thor’s hammer, believing it will make him immortal (JIM #107, ’64). He battles Thor in space, but appears to die when the rocket carrying him explodes (Thor #259, ’77). Surviving, he returns to Earth coated in stone debris, and fights the Avengers (Av #190, ’79).
