As the Berserker plows through the Italian army and air force, on the floating city, the dying Shadow Lord gives Rachel his stone necklace, telling her she will need it. Having buried Shadow Lord, the Avengers leave as the city sinks, and track down Berserker to confront him. However, they prove no match for his alien weaponry, and he departs with a captive Rachel. She dons the necklace Shadow Lord gave her. The Avengers confront him again, and Wonder Man deduces that if there was a doorway to the Shadow Realm, there must be a key. Figuring the door would open at sunset as Shadow Lord appeared at sunrise, Wonder Man plays possum long enough to get his hands on the necklace and forces its two pyramid pendants together, opening a portal which pulls in the Berserker, and then closes behind him.
Wonder Man’s director chides him. Shadow Lord and his city return. The Avengers attack and defeat Shadow Lord (Av #207, ’81). As a caveman warrior, Berserker is chased into a cave by enemies. He is exposed to strange energies, and he emerges with vast power. Berserker becomes a feared warrior for hire, fighting for rulers through history. His fame draws commissions from other planets, and his alien employers gift him with powerful weapons. Eventually he draws the attention of the Earth-Lords, who bury him in lava on the slopes of Vesuvius (2).
