Namor leads his fellow Avengers on a rescue mission to Atlantis, where barbarian warlord Attuma has taken over Namor’s former kingdom and imprisoned Namor’s long-lost alien lover, Marrina, holding her as bait. The Avengers try to enter Atlantis peacefully since they only want to free Marrina and have no interest in toppling Attuma’s new regime, but Attuma’s legions attack anyway. Marrina’s former teammates, Canadian super-team Alpha Flight, called in by Namor, soon arrive to assist. Working together, the Avengers and Alpha Flight beat back Attuma’s legions while Alpha’s Northstar frees Marrina herself. The battle stops when Namor finally convinces Attuma he has no interest in reclaiming the throne, though not before Atlantis has suffered extensive damage. The two teams depart, warning Attuma they’ll be watching him if he tries anything like this again, and he silently vows revenge. A distraught Marrina flees, pursued by Namor, and rejects his romantic overtures, feeling unworthy of them since her newly fluctuating alien nature has made her uglier and unstable. Marrina swims off alone and Namor resolves to find her and help her, taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Avengers.
