  • Neptune attacks Namor’s new undersea community Deluvia, wrecking its buildings and abducting Namor himself before the eyes of Namor’s wife Marrina and the terrified Deluvian populace. Reluctantly acting under Zeus’ orders, Neptune delivers his captive to Hades, where Namor and his fellow Avengers are sentenced to be tortured. Escaping the Hadean guardsman Cerberus but suffering serious injuries in the process, Namor is healed by a mystery man who directs Namor to Fortress Tartarus, where fi ve of his fellow Avengers are being held in the dungeon. Namor helps them break free and they storm the palace of Hades’ ruler Pluto, who is personally tormenting his old foe Thor. The other Avengers free a humiliated Thor, who confesses to the team that he wears his new armor to compensate for terrible injuries he recently suffered at the hands of Hela. The heroes head for the Pathway of Infi nity, the winding golden bridge that leads through the void beyond Hades to Olympus, but Pluto and his troops blow up a section of the bridge, forcing the Avengers to make a stand and fi ght Pluto’s army.

Hermes abducts Hercules (Av #279, ’87). Zeus refuses to believe the Avengers’ account that Hercules’ own recklessness caused his injuries. Enraged by Zeus’ attitude, Thor breaks his bonds and attacks Ares until Zeus strikes Thor down, declaring there are more Avengers to be captured (d).
