The cosmic-powered Super-Adaptoid banishes Kubik to space, imprisons the Avengers and Machine Man and replicates himself into an army. The arriving Black Knight and Dr. Druid fi nd themselves no match for the robot legion, but Kubik returns to Earth and enlists the aid of the Captain, the former Captain America, who challenges Super-Adaptoid and defeats one of his replicates. Dr. Druid tells the Adaptoid that his plans for world domination are pointless if he cannot adapt to duplicate human imagination. When the Captain claims the immortal Super- Adaptoid cannot understand life’s purpose, because unlike humans he is not mortal, the robot tries to prove the Avenger wrong by copying his mortality and promptly expires. Kubik frees the heroes and removes from the Adaptoid the sliver of Cosmic Cube that gave him his adapting powers.
Super-Adaptoid escapes prison, captures Mentallo, gathers Heavy Metal and summons Kubik (Av #286-289, ’87-88). Captain America holds the Cosmic Cube (Cap Ann #7, ’83).
Steve Rogers became the Captain in Cap #337, ’88, after the US government stripped him of his role as Captain America.
