  • A plainclothes Captain America, Gilgamesh and Thor are among the special guests touring the historic immigration facility at Ellis Island during its renovation. While there, they talk with embittered young Native American workman Charles Little Sky, who blames immigrants for his people losing control of their land. The super-mercenary Puma interrupts seeking to capture Charles, whom Puma’s shaman uncle has identified as a dangerous being of great power. Charles denies this, and the Avengers help him resist Puma’s efforts to take him into custody, but then Charles shocks himself and everyone else by accidentally, uncontrollably opening a portal to another dimension. Long-lost super-criminals the U-Foes use this portal to return to Earth, battling the Avengers and Puma while trying to kill Charles since they fear he might send them back. When Charles starts uncontrollably manifesting more dimensional portals, Gilgamesh knocks him out. Once the U-Foes are defeated, the Avengers and Puma argue about who should take custody of Charles and help him control his new powers, but a frightened Charles revives and uses his power to leave Earth, determined to remain free even in some unknown dimension. The Avengers reluctantly permit Puma’s departure, and the U-Foes are sent to the Vault while Cap ponders the irony of Charles becoming an immigrant in another dimension.

The U-Foes gain their powers (Hulk #254, ’80) and battle Hulk (Hulk #276, ’82). They escape prison, accidentally entering the Crossroads dimension (Hulk #304, ’85). Ironclad battles Hulk and is sent to a world of quicksand (Hulk #305, ’85). Vapor returns to the Crossroads dimension (p).

This issue includes a LoC from future comics writer Scott Tipton.
