The Gatherers invade Wakanda and forcibly subdue its ruler, the Black Panther, but his Avengers allies Hercules, Sersi, Thor and Vision intervene with canine teleporter Lockjaw’s aid. As battle ensues, a disoriented, headache-plagued Swordsman shakes off Proctor’s mental conditioning, slowly realizing this is not his home reality and that these Avengers are not his enemies. At Avengers HQ, Black Knight and Black Widow are still recovering from Cassandra’s attack, so Jarvis and Marilla urge them to rest. Meanwhile, in the Gatherers’ base, Proctor allows his mental control over Swordsman to lapse, suspecting it will drive the Swordsman mad and send Swordsman’s lover Magdalene back into Proctor’s arms. As Proctor turns from these thoughts to consult a mysterious advisor, the other Gatherers have defeated their foes, intending to wipe the Panther out of existence so that his dying counterpart Coal Tiger can replace him in this reality. The Coal Tiger protests, unwilling to survive via murder, and finally shames Swordsman into turning against his fellow Gatherers, saving the Panther. Coal Tiger dies, thanking Swordsman for preserving his honor. As Wakandan military reinforcements come to the recovering Avengers’ aid, the Gatherers flee except for Swordsman, who lags behind and is captured by the Avengers.
