A bound Vision-932 leads the Avengers to the Gatherers’ Andes mountain citadel. Inside, Cassandra is torturing the Avengers’ Vision until his fellow Avengers attack. The Avengers soon have the upper hand, until Proctor arrives and breaks up the fight. After blasting Vision-932 into pieces for betraying the Gatherers, Proctor notices that Black Knight has become Sersi’s Gann Josin, a role Proctor claims he once held himself. Proctor says he has seen Sersi destroy many alternate Earths and that she must die to save this Earth. When Black Knight protests and Proctor hurls him aside, Captain America urges caution as he helps the Knight up, but the Black Knight shocks everyone by attacking Cap, saying he is tired of Cap’s condescending attitude. Cap defends himself, trying not to hurt the Knight, who may be affected by his mind-meld with Sersi, until Black Widow stuns the crazed Knight with her widow’s bite. As the Knight calms down, Proctor says this is proof of Sersi’s madness, and offers further evidence of his knowledge by showing them his captive Watcher, Ute, whose powers Proctor has used to traverse alternate realities, all destroyed by Sersi, including one in which Proctor rescued the crippled Ute from Sersi’s rampage. Proctor says Sersi must die because she is too dangerously powerful, but Uatu the Watcher appears and says the same could be said of Proctor. Hercules calls Proctor a liar, denouncing Proctor’s plot to assassinate the Swordsman, which shocks Magdalene. When Proctor confesses to this crime, Magdalene attacks him. Apparently resigned to his fate, Proctor sets his citadel to self-destruct and mentally compels the Black Knight to impale him. As the wounded Proctor vanishes, the Watcher warns the Avengers that the danger is not over and that fate is not inevitable before vanishing himself. The Avengers and Magdalene flee the citadel as it explodes. Meanwhile, Shi’ar ruler Lilandra has learned Kree fanatics are targeting the Avengers, so Lilandra sends young rogue warrior Deathcry to act as the Avengers’ protector. Back on Earth, Drs. Pym and Foster have come to Avengers HQ to place the gravely wounded Swordsman in medical stasis, and to help evaluate whether Sersi may be going mad. When detectives Delgado and MacNamara arrive investigating the murder of Sersi’s lover, Sersi greets them while the scientists tend the Swordsman. The detectives are later seen at the bottom of the East River, turned to stone.
Deathcry’s codename is revealed next issue; her real name is revealed in ChW:DeAv #2, ’11. Donna Maria Puentes, seen as the Avengers’ receptionist in then-recent issues of Cap and Q, is mentioned when Sersi says the team’s receptionist has the night off. Magdalene’s honorary Avengers membership is later retroactively classified as starting this issue, since her association with the Avengers begins here. Hercules retains portions of his psionic armor after this issue as his standard costuming. This issue has a silver foil embossed cover.
