  • The Scarlet Witch collapses following the Whizzer’s attack, but not before warning the other Avengers that the Serpent Crown has been found. The Whizzer awakens, explaining that he thought he was attacking old enemies. Suspecting the Crown to be behind the attack, the team separates, with Captain America and Iron Man taking a Quinjet to California, following the Crown’s radioactive signature. Looking for Wonder Man, Beast finds him now under the Crown’s control, but after a brief fight Beast knocks him out and carries him back to the Mansion. Back at the mansion Whizzer reveals he came to the Avengers seeking their help tracking down his missing son Nuklo. Meanwhile, Cap and Iron Man have tracked the Crown’s energy signature to a US army base, only to be assaulted by the military and captured by the Living Laser, now wearing the Crown. The two Avengers learn the Laser used his new powers to trick the Whizzer into attacking them, and that he has teamed up with rogue army commander General Pollock, who reveals he also has a subdued Nuklo on hand as a weapon at his disposal. The other Avengers arrive, alongside a deprogrammed Wonder Man, and battle ensues, with the Vision relieving the Laser of the Serpent Crown. Released by the General, Nuklo turns on both Avengers and soldiers alike, growing in size and nearing explosive critical mass. The Whizzer arrives and speeds into Nuklo, triggering an implosion that discharges the excess energies and knocks both of them unconscious.

The Whizzer attacks the Avengers (Av #153, ’76). Rockefeller rallies his men while Iron Man monitors Rockefeller’s radioactive aura (Av #147, ’75). The Avengers battle Nuklo, but the Whizzer’s heart gives out (GSAv #1, ’74). After emergency surgery saves his life, the Whizzer watches Quicksilver and Crystal’s wedding on a viewscreen from his hospital bed. Falling into depression, he wanders the streets of New York’s Bowery in a drunken binge. After nearly drinking himself to death, he awakens in a hospital, where a vision of his deceased wife shakes him into sobriety (1). The Whizzer rips through a bureaucrat’s office until he finds files showing that the army is holding his son Nuklo (2). The Living Laser read about the Serpent Crown while in prison. After being released from prison, the Living Laser makes his powers innate, turning himself into living energy (3).
