After Captain America stops the Fixer from robbing Northwind Observatory, Vision has Cap assemble some Avengers to bolster Northwind security while a team of scientists, comprised of Mr. Fantastic, Beast, Hank Pym, and the egotistical Douglas Cartland, prepare Bruce Banner’s materials for transport to prevent future theft attempts. Following the arrival of the scientists and Richards’ teammate She-Hulk, a Hulk duplicate grows out of the ground outside and attacks the team but is instantly incinerated by a sting-blast from the Wasp. As Beast, Pym and Richards examine the corpse, Cap finds Cartland examining Banner’s work for the purpose of using it to further his own career. Cap is interrupted from admonishing Cartland by a security alarm and arrives to find Pym and Richards trapped in a blob of biomatter previously in the form of the Hulk’s pants. Arnim Zola, the Hulk duplicate’s creator, appears as a hologram and, after transferring his mind directly into the blob, taunts the Avengers with his plan to steal Banner’s work, then unleashes a Hulk army against them. At Cap’s direction Captain Marvel leaves the ensuing battle and frees Pym and Richards. Pym traces Zola’s control signal, and Marvel travels along the signal to Zola’s lair and begins overloading his equipment. The biomatter blobs and Hulks liquify, and Zola’s mind returns to his body. Though Zola knocks Marvel out, pounding on the outside of his lair from Thor prompts him to flee. Marvel pursues Zola’s escape craft, and Zola’s accidental activation of three more Hulks causes the ship to lose control and crash. Richards and Pym assure She-Hulk that her cousin’s work will never be used for ill, and Beast takes a moment to rib Cartland, whom Zola left tied upside down in Banner’s lab.
As children, Bruce Banner treats Jennifer Walters to popsicles (1). The two cousins later lose touch, Banner working on topsecret projects while Jennifer begins high school (2). Bruce Banner is caught in the explosion of his experimental gamma bomb, transforming him into the Hulk (Hulk #1, ’62). Banner gives a wounded Jennifer a blood transfusion to save her life, which gives her the ability to transform into She-Hulk (SavSH #1, ’80).
Beast is seen reading “The Panda’s Thumb” by Stephen Jay Gould. Cap mentions Beast’s reorganization of the Defenders as a formal team (Def #125, ’83). An art error shows Cap’s shield on his shoulders, then completely missing in subsequent panels. Wasp dons a new orange, pink & white costume in this story.
