The Celestials create the Deviants, creatures cursed by genetic instability. Deviants form an empire in Lemuria and take humans as slaves. They try to conquer the world but can’t claim Atlantis. The Celestials return and the Deviants attack, but the Celestials unleash a devastating weapon that sinks Lemuria and Atlantis (Sub #62/2, ’73). The Deviants retreat underground and seek to create slaves that can work there, resulting in Gor-Tok and Thera. Gor-Tok rebels and becomes king of the Gortokians. Some Gortokians worship the demon Cha’sa’dra and become Lava Men. Deviants create a weaker docile slave race and set them against the Gortokians, but they’re massacred. (1). Tyrannus is deposed as emperor and defeated by Black Knight (BK #1, ’90 fb). Merlin casts Tyrannus to Subterranea where he becomes ruler of the Tyrannoids (BK #2, ’90 fb). The Tyrannoids introduce Tyrannus to Deviant technology and keep him young by immersing him in a fountain of youth (2). Mole Man is shipwrecked and finds his way to Subterranea, where he becomes master of Moloids, monsters, and Deviant technology (FF #1, ’61 fb). Mole Man’s conquest is ended by the Fantastic Four (FF #1, ’61), while Tyrannus is foiled by Hulk (Hulk #5, ’63). Kala kidnaps Iron Man to create weapons for her, but he brings her to the surface where she rapidly ages (ToS #43, ’63). Lava Men rise up and are defeated by the Avengers (Av #5, ’64). An underground nuclear test devastates the Gortokian race, and the current king Gor-Tok is the only survivor; horribly mutated and vowing vengeance on the surface (X #41, ’68 fb) but is defeated by the X-Men (X #42, ’68) and Ms. Marvel (MsM #8, ’77). Tyrannus and Mole Man fight often, with Kala tipping the balance to Mole Man’s favor until she allies herself with Tyrannus (FF #127-128, ’72). Spurned by Tyrannus, she returned to Mole Man (MTE #25, ’80). Tyrannus is eaten by a serpent demon while fighting Dr. Strange (DD Ann #4, ’76). The Deviants begin a new campaign to conquer the surface (3).
