Pluto and Loki agree to a pact to slay each other’s sworn enemies, Thor and Hercules, so that Odin and Zeus will not suspect their involvement. Hercules departs Avengers Mansion to partake of “forced revelry” due to the absence of Taylor Madison. Loki enters Tartarus and, at Pluto’s insistence, frees the imprisoned Typhon and the creatures guarding him for his use as assassins against Hercules. While dining with two women at a New York restaurant, Hercules is mercilessly attacked and laid low by Typhon and his former guards. The Avengers arrive to help but Typhon damages the restaurant to the point of impending collapse, forcing the team to see to the occupants’ safety and allowing Typhon to escape with Hercules. The Vision deduces that Typhon’s vendetta against Zeus is a motive for the attack, and Thunderstrike opens a dimensional portal to take the team to Olympus. Rather than fulfill his vow to kill Hercules, Typhon takes him to Tartarus’ River Lethe and submerges him in its amnesia-causing waters. Typhon convinces Hercules that Zeus imprisoned them both, and Hercules agrees to attack Olympus alongside him. As Hercules attacks the Olympians, Typhon retrieves his enchanted axe from the Promethean Flame, snuffing it out and causing all of the Olympians to become immobile, intangible wraiths. The Avengers arrive and battle Typhon, Hercules, and their minions. Captain America tricks Hercules into diving into Olympus’ river, which restores his memory. The team whole once again, the Avengers attack Typhon and return his axe to the Promethean brazier, reigniting it and restoring the Olympians to corporal form. Zeus contacts Pluto, who denies any knowledge of the escapees’ freedom. Tentatively satisfied, Zeus casts Typhon back to Tartarus and sends the Avengers home. Loki, having witnessed the entire affair, is disappointed but eager to witness Pluto’s plans for Thor.
Last annual of the first Avengers series.
